Dreamboats and petticoats

It was a last minute ticket buy but one of the best shows iv seen yet. My mam and I went to see the musical dreamboats and petticoats and had an amazing night!! As we are both lovers of the theatre the whole night was a treat but for me it was soo much more. It was the easiest and fun research iv done in a little while.

Before the show had even started there is always such a buzz and an atmosphere that goes along with Newcastle's Theatre Royal. Over the past few years there has been work done on the theatre to restore it to it original style and I personally think it looks amazing. You actually feel that you could be anywhere in the world and it is so beautiful to be in and a part of something so special. So once we took our seats we were ready for the show to begin!!
The whole show from start to finish I thought was absolutely amazing, I was actually blown away by the end of it. I think that one o the main things that was really impressive for me was that fact that it was all done on a small stage was only a small cast of actors including the live band that went along with them on stage, you really did feel like you where there with them and it was impossible not to sing and dance along to it!!
I did really like how the musicians where actually a full part of the show and were interacted into each scene it felt more 'real', as sometimes I think the music gets dismissed but they are just as big a part of the musical as the singers and should definitely be front and centre stage sharing the lime light, it was fantastic, really something different to anything I had been before.
the story of course was very entertaining and enjoyable, you felt transported back into a different time, which made this even more clear as I watched and heard all of the older people in the audience, whooping and cheering when they recognised a song or type of dance. a few comments where even like 'eee I had a skirt like that' which proves how much research would have had to have gone into the shows costumes alone to fit into the time the show was set.
Of course for me I was entranced by the costumes on stage. The 1950's I would say is one of my favourite periods where it comes to fashion, I can not fully explain why by it is certainly one that I always seem to be more attracted to. In the costumes themselves they could tell a million stories I imagine from a simpler, more innocent, happier time. :) I loved that not one element was left out or even forgotten right down to when the girls where dancing with their skirts and we caught a glance of the old style nylon knickers, even thing had been thought of to create this show to make it believable.
Like I'v said previously everything had been thought of thoroughly and it was clear!!! Along with the setting, costumes, lighting, music even the dances made you want to get up and join in 'shaking all over' and 'twisting', which for me is everything that you want when you go to see a show. At the end of it again the place was still buzzing as people where leaving and making their ways home. A truly fantastic night, I know that my mam and myself thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing from start to finish but our only disappointment was that we had only bought tickets to one show!!! It was also something that I knew personally my grandma's would have loved and hope that it returns shortly so that I can too take them to see it and relive their past.

And of course there had to be something to push the night over the edge and be extra special where we found out their had been a celebrity had been preforming all night, and at the end sung three of this own songs. Ha well im not going to lie.... I did not have a clue who is was but when I seen him sitting signing autographs at the end I could not help myself but go and speak to him and tell him how much I enjoyed the show. I know though my grandma will be jealous :p
I love going to the theatre and think there's nothing better then seeing a live production of anything and as I am getting older and nearing the end of my education I cant help but feel utterly inspired and excited to think that I could possibly be working with or on a production just like this one gives me a ginormous push to keep going to be able to be a part of something amazing!!!

If you seen the show, or are just interested in it or this time period please leave me a comment, and let me see if yous liked it as much as I did.

  1. I went to see this yesterday in Newcastle with my mam and gran. I just agree with you - it was absolutely fantastic! From the music to the cast it was just brilliant. Was really disappointed that yesterday was their last night in Newcastle so I've booked tickets for Carlisle on the 25th! I can't wait!
